Lanell “LJ” Swoope

AGE: 25

BIRTHPLACE: Cleveland, Ohio

Q: What do you like to depict in your photos the most?

A: I like to show people’s lifestyle and whatever I think fits them.

Q: What inspires your art?

A: I would have to say local photographers and music.

Q: What purpose does art serve for you?

A: I think it’s an outlet for me to be free, because there’s no rules. You can do whatever you want to do with it, and it gives off so much feeling just like music.

Q: What are some of your favorite things to photograph?

A: I have to say people. I like to take photos of almost everything honestly, but mostly people.

Q: What are some of your future goals and aspirations?

A: I want to open up my own studio. I’m not going to tax people like the rest of these studios. They charge about $200 for an hour. That sh**’s lame. I just want to give back, because I know what it’s like to be a real starving artist. I also want to travel with musicians and take photos of them. I want to see the world.

Q: What is your favorite thing about summer?

A: My favorite thing about summer is that it doesn’t get dark till around 9.

Q: Who is your favorite artist? Why?

A: My favorite artist is Tyler the Creator. He’s a genius. I don’t like his clothes, though, because they are not my style. Besides that, he’s dope. His vision is out of this world.

Q: What do you want to communicate through your photos?

A: I want to show people that you can be different. Your photos don’t have to look like everyone else’s. Everybody has the same style and edit process to the point that everyone’s photos look the same. Don’t be a wave rider; create your own wave.

Q: Describe your work in 3 words.

A: Dark, different, and natural.

Q: How has photography impacted your life?

A: It hasn’t impacted my life quite yet, but I feel it coming. So far, I’ve met more people and became less anti-social because of photography.

Q: What is the most creative thing you have ever done?

A: It had to be when I was making my photos look like a bad acid trip. I deleted most of the photos off of my Instagram, but I think I still have a couple posts left.

Q: What would they serve you at your ideal summer cookout?

A: Seafood, of course. Swordfish, salmon, and you can’t forget the shrimp!!!
